Heat - Insects - Mosquitoes - Spiders - Snakes - Poison Ivy/Oak

Symptoms: Prevention: Treatment:
Heat Exhaustion: Sweating
Thirst
Tired Listless
Cramps
Loss of Appetite
Cool Clammy Skin
Dizziness
Nausea
Vomiting
 

Go inside or shake

Loosen Clothes

Drink Water

(with salt for cramps)

(Gatorade)

Rest

Heat Stroke: 1 or more of the following:
Headache
Weakness
Confusion,
Agitation,
Disorientated
Comma,
Fever of 105 degrees
Convulsion,
Nausea,
Vomiting,
Skin Dry
Flushed

Stay indoors on very hot days

Take frequent breaks from sun

Dress in light colored clothing

Drink plenty of fluid (9-13 quarts)

fluids = water, juices no sodas

Cool the victim
Call 911 if possible
Move victim to cool place and remove clothing
Use Cold Water, wet sheet and ice, fans, anything to cool temperature
At 100 degrees sweating should resume
Increase water intake if conscious

 

Insect Bites:

Lime Disease: Rash,
Red circles
flu like symptoms-
fever
headache
muscle pain
weakness

 

Mosquitoes: can spread Malaria, Yellow Fever, encephalitis, filariasis, West Nile Virus, Dengue Fever  Symptoms: Prevention: Treatment:
Bees:    

Remove stinger with blunt edged object, credit card, fingernail

**Do not pull Venom Sac

Wash with soap and water

Apply Ice every 10- 30 min. to reduce itching pain, swelling,

Apply baking soda, water, paste, every 15-30 minutes to relieve pain

Can use, antiperspirant, ammonia, after bite, bendryl, meat tenderizer (can cause burning)

Bees (allergic reactions):

Swelling large areas

difficulty breathing

Tightness in throat/chest

Dizziness

Hives

Fainting

Nausea

Vomiting

Pain

Swelling for more than 72 hours

Brown Recluse: (Description):
Color: light yellow, dark brown

Shape: Oval shape, has 8 legs, violin shape, on its back/head

Prefers: Warm dry places, attics, barns, closets, drawers, trash piles
Bite: almost painless

Will feel in 2-8 hours:

Pain

Dizziness

Swelling

Ulcerations

Rash

N/V

Jaundice Chills

Fever

Cramps

Joint Pain

   

Black Widow: (Description):
Color: black, dark brown, shiny

Shape: Round, bulb like shape, has 8 spindle long legs,

Is: 1 to 1.5 inches long, 1 inch wide
Has a yellow or red hourglass marking on underside of abdomen

Prefers: Outdoors, under stones, logs, hollow stumps, outhouses, rock walls, barns, word piles, dark and damp places

Bite: sharp pain , redness with two sting, red spots
venom effects within 30 minutes

Heavy sweating

Dizziness

Nausea

Vomiting

Abdominal Muscle becomes rigid

intense pain in arms, legs

difficulty breathing , talking,

death

 

Medical Attention is needed immediately, will need serum

Keep victim calm, still

Apply antiseptic ice to slow spread of venom

Tarantulas:
Only tropical tarantulas are poisonous

Non poisonous ones: will bite if teased

Bite is painful

Many are bought as pets, released or escape.

Have a big Hairy Sack

   

for non-poisonous:

Wash with soap and water


Apply anti-septic

Snakes:

 

There are 4 poisonous snakes:

Copperhead

Rattle Snakes

Coral Snakes

Water Moccasin/cotton mouth

   
Copperhead, Rattle Snakes, Coral Snakes, Water Moccasin, Cottonmouth:  

leave snake alone

do not tease snake

When walking in woods or bushes wear boots

Carry a big walking stick

Poke leaves ahead of you

Don’t turn over rock with your hands

Don’t reach into hollow rocks

Don’t reach, walk or swim in unknown waters

Antivenom

keep calm still, flush bite with water

apply constricting band between bite and heart

do not suck out venom

get to the hospital

if snake is dead, take it with you

Poison Ivy:
Description: Vine grows on trees, fences, stone walls

Fruit is gray not hairy, is dark, waxy

Green top, lighter, fuzzy beneath
3 leaves on long stem

Red Itchy Rash

Blisters

Spreads by contact

Also spreads through air if burned

Do not touch if you do not know what it is

Wash several times with soap and water

Use Benedryl or Calamine Lotion

Take a warm bath with oatmeal or baking soda

Lie in front of fan with wet cloth on area

Use HydroCortisone Cream

Poison Oak:
Shrub, but can climb trees
3 leaves on long stem, also dark, waxy fruit is having same color as ivy
